On of my favorite quotes of all time if by Bootsy Collins:

“You have to bring some funk to get some. You just can’t walk in a place and expect to get some funk. If you ain’t bring no funk, then you can’t get no funk… Another thing is, you can’t fake the funk or your nose will grow.” – Bootsy Collins

And that’s how advertising in the age of social media works.

Remember when it was simple? Your potential customers received just exactly the information, images, and sounds that you, the marketer, projected to them through media.

Well now they want a little more from you. They don’t just want to sit down an be fed your advertising message, they want to be entertained and/or informed by you in order for you to win the right to tell them about your product. That is the way of the social media / content marketing world.

There are so many marketers struggling to find their voice in social media. Basically I believe that the key to finding your branding “voice” comes down to the 80/20 rule: 80% of your content should be FOR your followers/fans/friends (in other words benefiting them) and 20% should be for your brand (benefiting you/your brand). Not so easy is it. Sure, it won’t cost as much money, but it will cost time …and creativity (which after all, end up costing money, right?). And as Bootsy so aptly points out, you can’t fake the funk or your nose will grow… …and your audience will shrink.

So take a fresh look at your social media presence. Are you entertaining? Are you informing? Does anyone care what you are posting? Those are the same questions that we in the media have had to use as a litmus test for our content forever, and now if as marketers we are to succeed with content marketing, the bar cannot be lowered.

You have to bring some funk to get some. There is no way around it. So bring it!
